As a player, parent, coach or innocent bystander, if you watch sports at all you invariably have found yourself with something to say about the umpires or refs – good or bad. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work in their shoes? Do you think you can do better? Do you want to learn more about the game of hockey? Do you want to know how the players actually behave on the field? Or maybe you want to see how tough it really is…
Here is your chance.
We will be working with local umpire manager, Fran Corl, to train young and new umpires, alike. Fran will review the rules of the game, their interpretations, how to implements them on the field, conduct of an umpire, game management, whistle timing and positioning among all of the other necessary knowledge and skills to become an umpire. She will start with the basics and progress you as far as you can handle.
Without umpires, games do not happen. With the ever growing popularity and skill level of hockey in our region it has become increasingly important to develop and train new, talented umpires. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to impact the game you love!
After the completion of our Spring 2014 and Winter 2014.2015 umpire development courses a total of eight new umpires were given a Level 1 rating. Good luck in their continued development and we hope to see them on the sidelines in the near future!
Testimonial from a parent-now-umpire-in-training:

“I am very grateful for the umpire development program that taught me so much, especially how challenging it is to be an umpire! I think all parents of players (and players themselves) should have to umpire at least 1 game in their life to better understand the complexity of that position. Fran is a master instructor, as well, and I appreciate her time and patience to teach all of us.” -Lisa
